Saint Mary of Scanzano's Sanctuary

art and monuments

Held by “Jesus, Saint Mary and Saint Joseph’s” congregation, it was founded in 1722. It was built, in 1733, by Jesuit Fathers’ leave (as they owned the land), thanks to Marquis Ignazio Pilo’s contribution and by the friars’ labour.
The sanctuary is situated where, according to the legend, a hunter, hunting a blessed doe, found a painting representing the Virgin, which is nowadays inside the friars’ convent, in the town. The brotherhood restored the church in 1896 and decorated it by eight big paintings.
Four of these paintings have been stolen, so the other ones are today kept inside the town convent. Inside the sanctuary there are eight reproductions of the original ones. A part of this collection represents the restoration of the church, while the other part illustrates the legend of the hunter and the painting.
