Cross Church

art and monuments

Once dedicated to the Virgin, it was founded in 1556 by Francesco Bologna. It is the oldest church of the town. Nearby, Olivetan monks founded a monastery. In 1784, the monks were chased away, because of internal quarrels in the town. The church and the monastery became part of the Royal estate. In 1870, the soldiers who had occupied the site were chased away. On April 29, 1900 Father Fiduccia opened again the church for the believers. The monastery was transformed in a hospital, then it was used as barracks for the local policemen for many years and, at last, it became the site of a school. Now it is the seat of Arnone’s foundations. The church has only one nave with few decorations. On the lateral walls, there are two simple altars, while on the main altar there’s a big wooden crucifix dating back to XVI century. The statue was sculpted by one of the Olivetan monks. Inside the church, there is a big oil painting of XVIII century, representing the Virgin with Saint Cyrus and Saint Rosalia. The chapel has been modified several times during the centuries. Recently, some works on the exterior walls have changed its look. When, in 1866, it was occupied by the soldiers, the church was closed and the statues, the bells and the altars were put in some other churches of the town. The drinking trough, near the church, is already mentioned in some acts about Marineo dating back to 1556-60. They’re selling acts of the first houses built following Francesco Bologna’s will.
