Convent "Saint Mary of the Doe"

art and monuments

It is situated on a hillock in the suburbs of the village, from which it is possible to enjoy a nice landscape and, when the weather is clear, you can see even the Egade Islands. In a register of the Vatican secret archives, there is some information about the foundation of the Convent in 1583, by the village Jury and by Vincenzo Bologna’s leave. In 1597, the friars of the medieval Scanzano Monastery moved here.
The law on ecclesiastical material goods obliged them to desert the Convent till December, 29 1946, when they came back there. It was possible to reach the church through a shaggy and winding way.
The main façade is very simple. There is a portal flanked by two little pilaster strips of late renaissance period, ending with two volutes and a cornice.
Here there are two decorated large bands, with simple festoons and this inscription: ”S.Maria de Dayna dicatum”. The bottom wall is the more lively and articulated side of the church. There are three communicating chapels. In the central one, with a barrel vault, there is the main altar. There are some chiaroscuro drawings, representing “The tamed tempest”, “The Virgin with St. Francis and St. Anthony” and “The good shepherd’s tale”. The decorations of the vault have a strong plastic effect. They were made by workers from Palermo. In 1920 they have been restored by a painter named Petruzzella.
The Convent keeps the following works of art:

St. Joseph with Jesus as a child (XVIII century)

Statue of the Immaculate Virgin (late XVIII or early XIX century)

Piety (made up by Master Pace in 1570 in Scanzano Monastery)

St.Vito (XVI century, by an unknown author)

Holy water font, in white marble (XV century)

On the left side, there is a painting of the Virgin of the Doe, made up by some Cretan artists during XV century.

On the right side, we can observe a painting of the Annunciation, made up by Tommaso Pollace (one of Vito D’Anna’s pupils) in 1784.
