Holy Souls' Church

art and monuments

The first official document about this church was signed on August 29, 1577. It’s an act of allotment by Pietro La Vigna to the Rectors, administrators of the Congregation of Jesus and the wretched people, founded in Marineo in 1570. In 1727, the church was built and it was incorporated by the nearby Capuchin Monastery, founded by Nicolò Pilo, helped by Father Salerno and Giuseppe Pilo. Today we can see only few traces of the ancient and rich monastery, such as the outside claustral grills. It had, inside, a little garden with a graveyard for the benefactors and the members of the Congregation, who had helped, during their lives, the dying people. When, in 1730, the nuns moved to St. Mary’s Convent, the old Monastery was deserted. In 1860 it was used as a hospital and as barracks for Garibaldi’s soldiers. The church was abandoned again and it went to rack and ruin, but in 1974 it was finally restored. Inside the church, the visitors can see an oil painting representing the souls in Purgatory, dating back to 1881.
