Sovarita wood and Scanzano lake

Leaving from Marineo, you have to take the old road between Godrano and Marineo, turning towards Massariotta wood. From there, it is possible to go on some excursions, on the numberless paths inside the wood. There, there are many ponds, full of many different water animals (water snakes, amphibians) and many birds. Suvarita Sierras are a part of a big woodland area next to Cappelliere Wood, where there are the southern mountains of Cozzo Ibleo (1007 m), Cozzo Cuciddu (951 m) and Cozzo Guardaboschi (767 m).
The area with an accentuated slope, in Suvarita Valley, becomes less irregular. The zone was once called after the cork plantations and it was, till a few decades ago, cultivated and very peopled, as many handcrafts found there show. We’re talking about little farmhouses, straw stacks, terraces, dykes, and so on. Though very damaged by the very big number of animals grazing there, the present vegetation is constituted by chestnuts and oaks, while shrubs and grasses are typical of the underbrush. 
Somewhere the naturalistic interest is very stirred.
Going on towards west, you reach the scout base “La Massariotta”, the most important in the South of Italy. It has been working since 1973, becoming a living centre for meetings and activities for Italian and Stranger scouts. Nature and ecology, physical education, handcrafts and creativity, acting and first aid activities are the main techniques learnt here by young people, among the trees and very close to nature. Going on, at the end of the slope, you arrive again to the national route, in a locality called ARCERA.
One Km forth, going along the river towards Corleone, there is Lake Scanzano. Next to the Lake, there are Cappelliere and Ficuzza woods, the biggest ones in western Sicily. During some special periods of the year, this wood turns to be the place of a wonderful nature party. The vegetation is luxuriant and there are animals of many different species, such as rapacious, wild boars, foxes, martens and weasels. The lake is the ideal spot to observe migrant birds. The landscape is a mix of the honey-like yellow of the fields already harvested, blended with the deep green of the vines. In direction Northwest, there is the big and important station for telecommunications called TELESPAZIO. calcara.
