The Straits Gorges

For those who want it, it is possible to take a difficult but interesting walk along a part of the river. The difficulties will be rewarded by the vision of very beautiful places. You must walk along a bristling path which, from the bridge, leads to the river soundings.
The place is a sort of excavation between two hills, “Montagnola” and “Pizzo Parrino”. The soundings are covered by a rich spontaneous vegetation, mainly trees (willows, tamarisks and ashes), shrubs (brambles, smilax, elders, and so on) and several grassy plants, typical of the river sides (rushes, grasses, etc…). The place is also a shelter for many water animals (reptiles and amphibians) and earth animals (porcupines, foxes, wild rabbits, martens and weasels). The rocky walls are an ideal place for the nidification of several rapacious (kestrels, buzzards, kites, owls, etc…). The trees are peopled by many kinds of birds, such as the river nightingale, the titmouse, the hoopoe, the wild pigeon, the swallow and so on.
After the narrow gorges, walking up along the river, on rocks made round by erosion, you can reach the ex- CALDERONE MILL, from which it is possible to make an interesting excursion to the little “Madunnuzza” church, not so far. The place is the seat, every year on September, of the Sausage village festival. Its look is characterised by many big oaks.
